a 6 foot painting/mixed media of my muse on panel: graphite, conte, acrylic, ink, copper, gold leaf.
Yes, I build these "armatures" from wood and the surface is birch plywood, sometimes 1/4" and sometimes 1/2" thick. I treat the surface with gesso and sand it down with a palm sander. For large pieces such as this I work on the surface once it's gessoed. On smaller pieces I adhere ragpaper and coat it with layers of acrylics which I sand down for texture to come through. The ragpaper (heavy, but smooth-surfaced paper) is best glued on with a gel medium (I prefer Golden brand, but liquitex is ok too) by brushing it on in sections and then using a brayer or roller to squeeze out the excess gel. The edges are cut off with a utility knife for a clean finish. You know, I may post the preparation process at some point to illustrate it visually. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions drop me a line in a note so I can be more thorough.
That sounds awfully complicated. It would be of great help if you post that preparation process sometime. Either way thank you for taking the time to reply. I'll try to read this again and see if I can internalize it, haha.

I'm planning of making some paintings and I want to try other surfaces instead of the well-known traditional canvas.
